There is a buzz in the air with live racing set to return this Friday at The Raceway at Western Fair District and it is going to be a busy October at the London oval.

Friday, October 7th will usher in the start of live racing and coincides with the second annual Oktoberfest celebration at the Western Fair District. To complement the Oktoberfest celebrations the wiener dogs will be back competing in the second annual Dachshund Dash. Additionally, the Raceway will offer Scratch ‘N’ Win program prizes, the Oktoberfest Pace and the Oktoberfest Stacked Deal which will include Top of the Fair’s buffet, admission to Oktoberfest, a Bavarian hat, a stein and a free beverage.

Friday, October 14th, The Raceway will play host to the 2016 National Driving Championship (NDC) which is being held for the first time at London’s half-mile oval.

Eight of the top drivers from across Canada have qualified to compete in the championship which will determine Canada’s representative to the World Driving Championship also being held in Canada next spring. More details on the NDC will be announced in the coming weeks.

October 21st’s live racing program will welcome the second annual Forest City Series. The same weekend the annual Forest City Yearling Sale will be hosted in the Metroland Media Agriplex on Sunday, October 23rd.

October 21st will also mark the finale of the Racing Under Saddle (RUS) series 2016 season. This will mark the end of the organization’s third season since having pari-mutuel wagering sanctioned in 2014 and the series continues to make great strides.

The busy month of October will wrap up on Friday, October 28th with the 11th Annual Harness the Hope Night. The event has grown in stature each year with the facility decked out in pink and a number of promotions offered, all in support of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

“We have something happening each weekend in October and it’s a great way to kick off the meet,” said Racing Manager Greg Blanchard. “We know horse people are anxious to get going and so are we.

The Raceway will start the season on a three-day-a-week schedule through December 31st. Racing will be offered each Monday and Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. and Fridays at 7:05 p.m.

Alongside the start of the 2016/2017 racing season is the start of a new food and beverage partnership with the Western Fair District and Spectra by Comcast Spectacor. Taking over the operation of Top of the Fair, Deke’s, Yuk Yuk’s, concession and catering functions at the Western Fair District Spectra has introduced new menus and their Everything Fresh™ philosophy to the properties.

This philosophy will be applied to the Western Fair District and guests will enjoy the freshest, highest quality ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible and served fresh. As an agricultural society the WFD is excited to continue to expand on their agricultural mandate to support the ongoing development of the agricultural industry and promoting its value to the community. Initiatives already underway include a vegetable garden on site at the Western Fair District’s Metroland Media Agriplex.

“Spectra has an outstanding reputation in London and throughout well-known venues across North America,” said Kris Dinel, Chief Business Development Officer with the Western Fair District. “Their work and success at Budweiser Gardens, here in London, has been stellar and we know that they will bring the same expertise and innovation to the Western Fair District.”
