London, ON – Western Fair Association (also known as Western Fair District - WFD) is pleased to announce that it has received a $498,800 grant from the Government of Ontario’s Community Building Fund - Capital stream. This grant, delivered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation between January 2022-2023, will support COVID-19 related public health requirements by allowing WFD to upgrade The Sports Centre’s HVAC system, now 20 years old, and improve indoor air quality for its many users.
“I am happy to see the Western Fair District receive this well-deserved grant from the Community Building Fund,” said London North Centre MPP Terence Kernaghan. “The Western Fair District is an important bridge between our agricultural and urban community, and this fantastic investment in proper ventilation and indoor air quality is crucial for continuing to do this safely.”
The project will improve the capabilities of several rooftop units that provide ventilation to change rooms and common use areas. Rooftop unit enhancements will include increased filter efficiency and ventilation capacity and allow air systems to be rebalanced to ensure negative air pressure conditions within individual change rooms.
This support from the Community Building Fund is greatly appreciated by The Sports Centre at Western Fair District. The 160,000 square foot facility houses three NHL ice surfaces, one of which is retrofitted for year-round accessible sporting options, as well as one larger international size rink. The facility opened in 2001 and has been a first-choice tournament, sports and recreation destination for residents of the city and far beyond ever since.
In the last 20 years, The Sports Centre has hosted hundreds of thousands of participants in ice sport practice and competition and is home to the London Nationals. Local to world class tournaments, ranging from hockey to ringette, figure skating to curling have benefitted from the facility and its dedicated staff. Thus, “the support received to renovate our existing HVAC system to meet new COVID-19 public health requirements is greatly appreciated, and will help us extend the life and maximize the use of this important sport tourism and community facility as we come out of the pandemic,” said Whitney Crawford, Director of Events and Recreation for the District.
