This Week’s Comedians
Martha Chaves is a busy comic. Her infectious, candid style, her captivating stage presence, and her gift to relate to a wide range of audiences grant her numerous presentations at clubs, colleges, fundraisers, corporate functions and comedy festivals. Martha is a veteran of multiple Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, and of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. She has also appeared in the Halifax, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Boston Comedy Festivals, and in the “Marshalls’ Women of Comedy,” in NYC. In Spanish, she’s performed in the Festival Del Humor de Caracol, in Bogotá, Colombia.
Her versatile material mixed with her fluency in 4 languages make her an asset to perform for an array of fascinating audiences. For example, the Canadian Peacekeeping Troops (in Alert, Egypt, Israel, and Afghanistan) and The Nobel Women’s Initiative, a delegation of women led by Nobel Peace Prize winners (in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala).
In 2015, Martha warmed up 43,000 people for the 2015 Pan Am Games - Opening Ceremony and in 2016, she hosted the ACTRA Awards, in Toronto. Her TV credits include two national comedy specials: COMICS! on CBC, and Something About Martha on CTV and The Comedy Network, plus her TV appearances on Just for Laughs, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, to mention a few. Martha is a regular on CBC Radio’s “Laugh Out Loud,”, “The Debaters,” and “Because News.”
Her witty and poignant one-woman show, “In Times of Trouble,” was featured in The SOULO Festival of One-Person Shows, (May 2015) and in ALUNA Theatre’s CAMINOS Festival (November 2015). In 2016, she was invited to perform it in the SOLOCOM Festival in New York City’s PIT Theatre. In May 2017, the SOULO Festival of One-Person Shows launched “A Rebel Without a Pause,” Martha’s autobiographical piece about becoming a Refugee in Canada, and finding her “rebel” voice as a Latin-Canadian, doing comedy in a second language.
Nigel Grinstead’s laid back charm and absurd takes on life have earned him the reputation of being one of the goofiest and most imaginative comics in the Canadian scene.
Jumpstarting his career with consecutive victories in high-profile competition generated a lot of buzz, receiving the Tim Sim’s Encouragement Fund for his win at Cream of Comedy 2013, placing first in the 2014 Toronto Comedy Brawl, as well as recently taking home first place at the Homegrown competition at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival: an annual contest recognizing the strongest upcoming Canadian talent. All of this momentum granted him the opportunity to perform in festivals all across the country including the Cottage Country Comedy Festival, Sudbury’s LOL Festival, and NXNE. Above all, Nigel has had the distinct honor of taping two sets at Just For Laughs to air on The Comedy Network, as well as one set for CBC Television at the Halifax Comedy Festival. He was also a finalist in Sirius XM’s Top Comic competition and has performed at renowned venues such as Massey Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Theater. Nigel has opened for many international headliners and you can hear his comedy on the radio, see it on TV, or catch him live coast to coast!
Jeff has quickly established himself as a rising star in the Canadian comedy scene and was nominated for a prestigious Canadian Comedy Award. Jeff is also a favourite on the festival circuit having appeared at the CBC’s Winnipeg and Halifax Comedy Festivals and the Icebreakers Comedy Festival. As well, he can be heard on XM Satellite Radio and has appeared three times on The Being Frank Show. As a writer, Jeff freelances for several major advertising agencies and does script consulting for Disney.
When he is not winning over audiences and readers with his outstanding writing, Jeff can also be seen in his many commercials. He has appeared in international campaigns for many large companies such as Budweiser, Honda and Canadian Tire.
Regardless of the medium, Jeff is an undeniable talent that should not be missed.
