THIS WEEK’S COMEDIANS
Pete Johansson has earned the title of global headlining comic with a relentless non stop schedule taking him to every corner of the globe. His unique socially progressive, intellectually challenging, yet accessible and silly comedy has garnered a devoted following of fans looking for laughs with something more. This profile was recently bolstered with his very well reviewed (chortle.co.uk) first comedy special ‘You might also enjoy…Pete Johansson’ released by Netflixsimultaneously in 82 countries and a critically acclaimed and powerful appearance on Comedy Central’s ‘This is Not Happening’.
A favourite at comedy festivals, Pete is one of only three Canadians ever nominated for an Edinburgh award at the Edinburgh Fringe, and has been invited to perform from South Africa to Australia to Singapore. Originally from Kelowna, Pete started performing in his teens, and developed his art from coast to coast in Canada making his first appearance at The Just For Laughs festival when he was only 24 and following that up with 6 more appearances at the festival over his 20 year career, including 4 galas taped for the CBC. Numerous other TV appearances fill his resume, from The Late Late Show on CBS, Premium Blend on Comedy Central, Friday Night on NBC, Russell Howard’s Good News on BBC, The Best of the Fest on Channel 4, Live From the Comedy Store on Comedy Central, Russell Peters Red Light District on Showtime, 2 Episodes of ‘The Debaters’ TV show on CBC, one of which was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award, and three Winnipeg Comedy festival Gala’s. A relentless writer, and social critic you can always expect an engaging and intriguing show from this once in a lifetime comedian.
After appearances at the Just For Laughs Festival and a breakout viral video from Winnipeg Comedy Festival in 2018, (over 1.2M views on YouTube and 15M on Facebook), Rob Bebenek has asserted himself as one of the brightest new voices to come out of Canada.
Quick wit and a keen eye for observation, highlight a comedy skill set that is becoming a force on stages across North America, and has audiences wanting more.
As a finalist in SiriusXM’s Top Comic, Bebenek asserted himself as a major player in comedy and has since imposed his brand on Theatres, clubs and colleges, and rightly so. The man is flat out funny.
From Kitchener Ontario, Bebenek AKA Ol’ Bebsie, has been drawing acclaim across Canada earning himself appearances on MTV and opening concert series for Bob Saget, Burt Kreischer, Charlie Murphy, Steve-O, and Gerry Dee, to name a few.
Trinidadian-born, Brooklyn raised and currently resident of Toronto, comedian Jean Paul has always had an innate sense of humour. Maybe it’s because of his curious nature; maybe it’s because of his light-hearted view on life. Whatever the reason, Jean knew at an early age that a career in comedy was right for him. Since then, Jean has traveled extensively across Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean, South Africa and the U.K., performing at such legendary venues as the Apollo in New York, the Comedy Store in London, and at Place des Arts in Montreal. No stranger to the festival circuit, Jean has performed at Just For Laughs, Halifax and Winnipeg comedy Festivals and among other credits has written for and toured with Russell Peters.
Jean has also been nominated for several prestigious awards, including the Tim Sims’ Award for up-and-coming comedians, and a Gemini Award for Best Writing in a Comedy Series.
He has also proven his talent in on TV and film. He has conquered television as a correspondent on Phat TV, portrayed a wide assortment of characters in the CBC special Thick and Thin, appeared multiple times as a guest on the CBC’s Strombo Show and on CTV’s A Russell Peters Christmas Special. He also played the popular Fluff E the Hip-Hop Bunny, on the Comedy Network’s Buzz Show, and is featured in Home Again and A Universal Language.
