Western Fair District’s Confederation Building - Receives Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant for New Roof

London, Ontario – June 24, 2015: Western Fair District (WFD) is pleased to announce that it has received a $100,000 grant, for one year, from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support the continued development of a Food District, by replacing the roof of the Confederation Building, located off of Queens Park and Dundas Street in the Old East Village.

“I’m delighted that our government, through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, supported this project,” said Deb Matthews MPP, London North Centre. “The Confederation Building is a wonderful piece of history in our community that provides a welcoming space for vendors and customers of the Western Fair Farmers’ and Artisans Market. I’m delighted that one of my favourite places to go on Saturday mornings will have a new roof, which will improve the space and make it more energy efficient.”

Built in 1928, to replace the Western Fair’s Crystal Palace, the attractive older building retains much of its charm and the vintage structure provides important ambience for customers and vendors of the Western Fair Farmers’ and Artisan’s Market.  As a key interface between urban and rural populations, the WFD’s mission and mandate is to develop programs that meet the needs and enrich life in the communities it serves.  More specifically, to provide a facility intended to meet the needs of the agricultural community.  The market’s vendors support a number of local food initiatives and agri-business.

The current roof was of significant age and the scope of work included the removal of the existing roofing system and flashing, followed by the installation of a new built-up roofing system. “The new roof ensures the Confederation Building and its status as a community asset carries on as a safe, functional and historically significant space, within the Western Fair District,” said Hugh Mitchell, CEO, WFD, “we thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support.  The grant increases the life of the building and makes it more energy efficient for years to come.”
