When I’m not blogging about the Western Fair, OR working my part-time retail job, I have another job- I’m a supply teacher for the Thames Valley District School Board. Since school is just starting to get into the swing of things, I have yet to work a day. However, I was asked by a teacher friend of mine (Hi Linda!), to help out on their class trip to the fair. So naturally I said YES!
A grade 3 and ¾ class went, and wow was it ever fun, AND educational! I’m not just saying positive things about the program because I’m a “real serious blogger”, but it seriously was such a well run, informative day.
In the morning you rotate through 3 different stations- ours were in the area with the children’s farming activities. We learned about horses, community gardens, and water conservation. The children got to ride a horse simulator, touch, feel and talk about plants, fruits and vegetables, AND they got to see insects/animals found in healthy water systems, not to mention participate in a rubber duck race. Pretty busy morning!
Lunch took place in the area where the horse shows took place- so there were lots to see while eating!
After lunch we stayed in the Agriplex and was able to learn all about Poultry, Dairy Farms, and Visited with Cowboy Fred who taught us about Sheep (and sheep shearing!), piglets (did you know that piglets feed off the same nipple every single time? If one gets confused, a fight breaks out!), and Llamas! We saw cows being milked, chicks hatching, roosters crowing, piglets screeching, lambs slipping through the barriers between pens, and VERY pregnant Dairy cows!
From one teacher to another- if you get the chance to participate in this program- DO IT! It’s free for students, teachers and volunteers! Who doesn’t like free stuff? Great way to spend a school day if you ask me.
