London, Ontario, January 21, 2015: With the grassroots goal of introducing young children to the activity of ice skating; Southside Group, Pete’s Sports, Huff and Puff Hockey and the Western Fair District (WFD) Sports Centre, have joined forces to create a youth program for grade 2 pupils, within the public and catholic school systems.  The Learn to Skate initiative provides children with the opportunity to lace-up and expose themselves to a recreational activity that has ties to numerous ice sport activities as well as health and fitness benefits.

Southside Group, the new program’s major sponsor, “is committed to supporting opportunities for young people,” says Vito Frijia, President of Southside Group. “Developing opportunities that expose them to fitness, sport and skills, on the playground, court or rink, with a little luck, develops into a love for one activity or another that can keep them focused on all the positives sports and core skills offer growing up.”

This new WFD Sports Centre pilot program, with the School Boards support, will give children in grade 2 classrooms the opportunity to get on skates and learn the fundamentals of ice skating over a four week period. Running January 20-February 10 with a second session scheduled February 17 – March 24, approximately 300+ children will benefit free of charge.  Organized instruction is provided by a professional instructor, as well as skates and helmets courtesy of Pete’s Sports and Huff and Puff Hockey volunteers will assist with on-ice support.
