A Few Things to Remember

  • Please read General Rules and Information, click here.
  • Paid entries received by August 25th regardless of the number of classes entered will receive two admissions to the Fair for September 16th, 2017.  These will be mailed to the contestant.
  • All entries must be made online (www.westernfairdistrict.com) or on the printed entry form.  If entries in any section are not sufficient to ensure competition, the committee reserves the right to cancel any section or incorporate it with another suitable section.
  • A contestant may enter both fiddling and step dancing competitions, but may enter in one section only in each class with the exception of Group Step Dancing and Duet Fiddling.
  • When age is a condition of entry it will be calculated as of the first day of the annual Western Fair.  This year the date is September 8th, 2017.
  • The above schedule is tentative and subject to change depending on entries received. 
  • Scoring will be based on the following criteria: Timing, Precision of Footwork, Quality & Variety of Steps, Showmanship & Personality
  • The Western Fair District will provide an experienced fiddler and pianist or you may use your own fiddle/piano duo.  All contestants must dance to live music.  A panel of three experienced judges will be provided.  In all cases, the judges’ decision is final.
      

Group Entries

  • To determine in which age category a group must compete, divide the total ages by the number of dancers in the group. (Average ages of 11.2 or 11.9 for example are considered 11 years of age and under.) 
  • Entry form must be received in the office with individual information and entry fee.  Prize money will be handed out on the competition day in cash. For groups one envelope with the winning amount will be handed out.  It is up to the group to divide the prize money between the group members.
  • Bottom portion of entry form should include Group name, Entrant’s name, home cities, name of the tune being performed (fiddling competition).  This information will be used by the Master of Ceremonies.
  • Open to dancing groups with three or more members.  A group may perform any type of dance that is recognized as a group number.  There will be a five minute time limit for each group.

  • All fiddlers, professional or amateur, are eligible to compete. Each contestant will be judged solely on his/her performance at the Western Fair.
  • There will be a time limit of five minutes for each contestant/group.
  • Solo contestants must play a Waltz, a Jig, and a Reel, in that order.  Duet class must play a Waltz plus a tune of their choice & must play in harmony. Contestants will be disqualified for failure to comply with this rule. The contestant may move the microphone if he/she desires.
  • Contestants must play old time style tunes.
  • Western Fair will provide a piano and a stand-by pianist for those who do not have their own accompanist. 
  • In the event a contestant has problems with his/her instrument (i.e. broken string etc.) a re-play will be allowed.
  • The Western Fair District will provide a panel of judges who will consider the following in making their decision.  Tempo (must be suitable for old time dancing), Tone, Style, Technique and Accuracy.
    In all cases the judges’ decision is final.

PRELIMINARY COMPETITIONS

Preliminary competitions for the Youth and Junior Talent Search will be held in various locations in Ontario (see complete listing) A contestant may enter any preliminary competition he or she chooses and may enter only once in any of the categories. They may enter as many of the categories as they wish.   Example: A vocal soloist by also perform in a band.

ELIGIBILITY

The contest is open to non-professional residents of Ontario only (see web-site for the definition of a “professional performer”). An individual cannot be part of an act at the Western Fair if he or she did not appear and place in the act at a Preliminary Contest.

RISE 2 FAME Youth Talent Search:
Youth Talent Contestants must be between the age of 13 and 21 years.  The performer must be at least 13 years old and must not have reached his/her 22nd birthday on or before the opening day of the current year’s Western Fair.

RISE 2 FAME: Junior Talent Search: 
Junior Talent Contestants must be between the age of 6 and 12 years. The performer must be at least 6 years old and must not have reached his/her 13th birthday on or before the opening day of the current year’s Western Fair. Proof of age may be requested.
