A Few Things to Remember

  • Please read General Rules and Information, click here.
  • Only one exhibit per section. Exhibitors can enter each section.
  • Fill out entry form completely and have it signed by Mom or Dad.
  • Fill out your age on the entry form and have it mailed back by Thursday August 17th, 2017.
  • All articles exhibited must be the property of the person/persons in whose name they are entered.
  • Exhibitors are responsible for all containers/carriers, etc required to transport their goods to and from the Entry Office.
  • All items must be the recent, unsoiled work of the exhibitor.
  • Judges will be looking for uniqueness, creativity and functionality in all categories.

Youth Competition - (YC)

NO ENTRY FEE
Prize Money for each Section:

1st- $20   |   2nd- $15   |   3rd- $10

AGES 5 & Under 

1. PAINTED SNAKE:  Paint a stick (of any size) to look like a snake.

2. 3D ART WITH A CANADIAN THEME:  A few ideas to get you started might be, paper rolls or cotton balls will bring your art to life.

3. ART: Any medium on paper or canvas created at home or at school may be entered. Example: Painting, pastel drawing, pen and ink drawing.

4. SOCK PUPPET: There is always a use for mom or dad’s old socks.  A pair of eyes, funny nose or a little paint will have all the family giggling.

5. EGG CARTON BUG: Using an egg carton and other art supplies, make your favorite bug.

 

AGES 6 - 10                                                           

1. LEGO: Build a unique sculpture using Lego or Duplo. Include a label with a title and short description of your creation.

2. 3D ART WITH A CANADIAN THEME: Whether you use, play-doh, Styrofoam cups, tin cans, pop bottles or egg cartons your creative skills are sure to stand out and be noticed.

3. ART: Any medium on paper or canvas created at home or at school may be entered. Ex. Painting, pastel drawing, pen and ink drawing.

4. MARSHMALLOW HOUSE OR STRUCTURE:   From castles to igloo’s and everything in-between, your dream house is just a marshmallow away.

5. FLOWER POT: Decorate a clay flower pot, maximum size 8 inches across.

 

AGES 11 – 15

1. LEGO: Build a unique sculpture using Lego or Duplo. Include a label with a title and short description of your creation.

2. 3D ART WITH A CANADIAN THEME: Water bottles, tin cans, old flower pots are just some ideas to help make your art stand out.

3. MARSHMALLOW HOUSE OR STRUCTURE:  From castles to igloo’s and everything in-between, your dream house is just a marshmallow away. 

4. MARBLE RUN: Whether you use pop bottles, paper towel rolls or tubing, marble runs are fun to create and watch.  Let your mind twist and roll with new ideas.

5. PIRATE SHIP: Design a pirate ship using a 2 litre milk carton.

 


 

OAAS Getting Back to Our Roots: Create an original handmade poster showing why you love the Western Fair!

NO ENTRY FEE
Prize Money for each Section:

1st- $15   |   2nd- $10   |   3rd- $5

Things to Remember

  • Name and date of the fair must be clearly shown on the poster.
  • Must be hand drawn.
  • Poster size:  Minimum 22cm x 28cm without boarder, Maximum 28cm x 44cm without border.
  • Each entry must be centered on a CARDSTOCK or BRISTOL BOARD exposing a 5.5cm border on all four sides. 

Section & Description

  1. Junior:  Up to & including Grade 4.
  2. Intermediate:  Grade 5 to Grade 8 inclusive.
  3. Senior:  Grade 9 to Grade 12 Inclusive.

Winners from the Western Fair will go on to District Competition.  The District winners are eligible to enter the Provincial Competition at O.A.A.S. Convention.

 


 

Remembrance - (YV)

NO ENTRY FEE

The Western Fair District is proud and honoured to work with the Veterans in our City. 

To show how much we appreciate all that they have done and, continue to do, for our country, city and community we would like YOU to REMEMBER them through a drawing or poster with Canada’s 150th birthday as a focus point.  All entries will be displayed in the Canada Building during the annual Western Fair.

Ages 10 & Under
1. Poster:  Create a Canada’s Birthday poster demonstrating what our Veterans mean to you.  Max size (16” x 20”)

Ages 11 - 16  
2. Poster:  Create a Canada’s Birthday poster demonstrating what our Veterans mean to you.  Max size (16” x 20”)

 


 

Craft Competition (16 and Up) - (CC)

Section & Description

1. CANADIAN FLAG

Using your imagination make a Canadian flag using anything from wood, to marbles or beads and anything in-between.  Maximum size 46cm x 61cm(18’ x 24”)

2. PILLOWS

There is nothing more relaxing then curling up with your favourite pillow.  Shape, size and decorations are all that helps to keep it comfy. 

3. JEANS

They are not just for wearing.  Grab an old pair of jeans and see what you can make from it.  Purse, placements, hats, pillows and jewelry are just a few items to get you started.

4. COLOURING/ART THERAPY

The latest adult craze! Colouring is a great way to reconnect with your youth and a satisfying solution to disconnect from reality.  All entries must be displayed on a 40cm x 51 cm (16” x 20”) matt board.

5. CHRISTMAS WREATH

Decorate a Christmas wreath, ready to hang.

6. PROCRASTINATORS

90% finished.  We all have that one craft that we can’t seem to finish.  It could be dress not hemmed, a knitted sweater without the buttons, a wreath without the ribbon or pottery without the glaze.

 


 

Weird & Wacky - (WW) Ugly Lamp

Entry Fee: $2.00

Section & Description

1. UGLY LAMP

This one is fun! Do you have a lamp that is unusual? Add your own wacky touch to create an ugly lamp. Embellish a lamp you already own or stop by the local thrift shop and pick up the ugliest lamp you can find and add your own special touch to make it the ugliest lamp in the competition. Lamp must function. 

2. TACKY TIE

We have all seen one but now it’s your turn to create one.  Just imagine the faces of everyone at the board table when you, or your loved one, shows up wearing a one-of-a-kind hand decorated tie. 

3. HORRIFIC HAT

Use your imagination and add some wackiness to it, the stranger the better. Be creative and use any materials to make it your own! Any style hat is allowed (Fisherman’s hat, visor, ball cap, top hat, etc).

4. SCARY SCARECROW

From the farmers’ fields to your front lawn or balcony, scarecrows can still scare away unwanted guests.  Scarecrow must be self-standing.  Min. 3ft tall.

5. DREADFUL SWEATER

We all have that one Ugly Sweater.  Whether it was a gift from the in-laws or a fashion statement from years gone by, now’s the chance to add a little more decoration to it and show it off.

6. AWFUL INSPIRATIONS

Any weird item inspired by an online source such as Pinterest or Craft blog etc. 

 


 

Recycled Art - (RA)

Entry Fee: $2.00 (includes entrance into each section)

Section & Description

CENTERPIECE

With your old china and crystal create a centerpiece for your coffee or patio table.

JUNK CHIME

Use items found around your house to create a musical wind chime.  Ideas can include, spoons, forks and even your old pots and pans.

GARDEN ART

Create a useful item for your garden (a welcome sign, bird house, stepping stones, flower pot, etc) using reused, reclaimed and repurposed materials. 

BLUE BOX ART

Use items found in your blue box to create a masterpiece.

BUTTON FUN

Using buttons make a picture showing off what you love about Canada.  It must be framed and ready hang, 10x12 or less
