Security staff report directly to the Security and Traffic Manager.  They provide assistance, direction and exceptional customer service to patrons and staff, provide high visibility security to patrons and staff and are responsible for performing Security functions.  In addition they ensure the peaceful enjoyment of our facilities by our customers and are responsible for the enforcement of Western Fair District policies as well as any legislated Regulations.

Responsibilities of Security

  • Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Responsible for the usage of audio equipment.
  • Answer alarms and investigate disturbances.
  • Responsible for keeping recordings that may be used as evidence in any legal proceedings. 
  • Write reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.
  • Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • May be required to stand for long periods of time and/or carry out routine foot patrols.
  • Operates and maintains various equipment and vehicles in a safe and professional manner.
  • Attends all departmental meetings as well as all safety and professional development training sessions as directed.
  • Maintains professional licenses. (Security Licence, ORC Licence, Smart Serve, etc).
  • Must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Western Fair District Health & Safety Policy and Awareness Program/Safety Manual, all Western Fair District procedures and any other applicable legislation.
  • Other related duties and required or assigned.

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Grade 12 education combined with 5 years security experience OR Post Secondary education (Law & Security, Police Foundations) with 2 years experience (may consider related experience).
  • Must maintain a professional license in Security by the Province of Ontario
  • Able to obtain AGCO and ORC license
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Driver’s license
  • Must be physically fit and able to carry out the duties and assignments of this position.
  • Must possess strong public relations/customer service skills.
  • Must have good communication skills (oral and written).
  • Able to effectively communicate with customers and patrons providing information and direction.
  • Exhibit good judgment and decision making skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate with and report any equipment problems to Supervisor.
  • Required to carry out duties and complete appropriate reports/documents as outlined in the Standing Orders.
  • Must be able to work without direct supervision.
  • May be required to stand for long periods of time and/or carry out routine foot patrols.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Atypical work hours.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends including holidays
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Building maintenance including painting, minor repairs and janitorial.
  • Special events changeovers when required.
  • Maintain related work and activity records such as timesheets.
  • Responsible for all of the physical plant operations of the Centre when Sports Centre Operations Manager is absent.
  • Reports any problems to the Sports Centre Operations Manager in a timely manner to ensure the effective operation of the Sports Centre and other WFA facilities.
  • Attends meetings with staff and Management as directed.
  • Maintains awareness of legislation pertaining to the operations sector.
  • Assist when necessary in all other areas of Western Fair District
  • Maintains assigned inventory of supplies and equipment and reports needs to manager. 
  • Must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Western Fair District Health & Safety Policy and Awareness Program/Safety Manual, all Western Fair District procedures and any other applicable legislation.
  • Heavy lifting may be required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications
  • College Diploma in related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of equipment and building maintenance
  • Priority will be given to those with Class B Refrigeration Operators License
  • 2-3 years experience in the arena industry
  • 1-2 years supervisory experience
  • First Aid and WHMIS training would be an asset
  • Certified Ice Technician designation would be an asset
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Valid Driver’s license with clean abstract
